This ghat is named after the mythological character Raja Harishchandra, who once worked at this ghat. Now, this king is believed to be righteous and truthful and gods were pleased with his humble behavior and thus retrieved his lost kingdom and his dead son to him. Harishchandra Ghat is one of the two ghats used for cremation in Varanasi and it is reckoned that whoever is cremated here attains Moksha or Salvation. This ghat is named after the great poet Tulsidas, who is believed to be the author of the Hindu epic Ramcharitramanas. It is believed Tulsidas sat on this ghat of the river and wrote a large part of Ramcharitramanas here. It is also reckoned that the first ever Ramlila (the story of Lord Rama’s life) was staged at this ghat. There is a big temple here that is dedicated to Lord Rama on this ghat. At Tulsi ghat many cultural activities also take place and the most popular one is the Krishnalila that takes place in the month of Kartika (Oct/Nov).
Famed for being the shelter of the famous Sanskrit scholar Madhusudan Sarasvati and for its palace built by King Digbatiya of Champaran, Bihar, this ghat is one of its kind. Do not confuse it with the New Vishwanath temple of Varanasi. This is one of the holiest Shiva temples on earth. It is also called as the golden temple of Varanasi. The temple was destroyed numerous times in the pasts by invaders and rulers. The current structure was built in 16th century. The exact year of initial construction of the temple is unknown. The whereabouts of the temple were indicated in holy scripts, which are several centuries old. In 12th century, the temple was first demolished. You can also find the mosque built by Aurangazeb, near the temple. The mosque was built after demolishing the temple. According to the legends, during a dispute between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, about who the mightiest was, Lord Shiva came up with an idea. He turned into a large column of light and announced that he who could find the end of the light will be the mightiest. After trying, Lord Vishnu admitted that he failed to find the end. On the other hand, Lord Brahma lied about finding the end of the light. He cursed him that he would not have any place of worship on land. The column of light pierced earth on 12 places. These 12 places are considered as jyotirlinga. One of those twelve places is the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
A representative of the cruise operator has said that initially the charges would be around Rs 750 plus GST per passenger for the ride. “We are ready for the launch of this service. As soon as we get the go ahead we can start the service. We have timed both morning and evening cruises in a manner which leaves whole daytime free to the tourists for doing other activities or visiting other places of interest,” said Vikas Malviya, one of the directors of the Varanasi-based start-up venture Nordic Cruiseline told TOI.
Chandraprabha sanctuary is situated to the Southeast of Varanasi. Though one of India’s lesser-known sanctuaries, Chandraprabha is endowed with beautiful picnic spots, dense forests, and scenic waterfalls like Rajdari and Devdari that attract a large number of tourists.
