Hamza Qassim worked with the Palestinian label Trashy Clothing’s summer 2021 campaign: In order for Lawrence to visit his friends in Ramallah, Palestine, he has to wait up to two hours to pass a checkpoint, whereas, without a checkpoint, the trip would be only around 20 minutes. To quickly pass though, Lawrence and his friends often dress in skimpier outfits, in hopes of appearing more Western or foreign. In turn, Trashy Clothing underscores this point with pieces that are as easily removable as possible, using accessible zippers and exaggerated slips. “People are often checked on how they look, so if you are dressing in less, you’re less likely to get stopped,” says Lawrence. “When I was younger and we’d go out, we’d put on foreign music, like Italian music, in the car to not be asked for IDs. If we were wearing jackets, we’d take them off. It’s the concept of undressing and being ready to get undressed at any point.”

Creative director Olivier Rousteing returned to the catwalk last night, presenting a collection which was designed as a response to his own suffering after being burned and scarred as a result of an explosion in his home in 2020. It was a message of the power of hope and truth, he said and, while not originally intended as a response to what is happening in Ukraine, those are two things we have never needed more than we do right now. These runway offerings were not designed as a direct response to the recent horrific invasion of our neighbours and I would never dare to even think of comparing the suffering that they are going through right now with the problems that I have had on social media. Still, as we watch the news, my team and I do keep in mind this collection’s message: united in solidarity, we can rely on the power of hope and truth to push back against hate, lies and aggression.

That did not mean however, that we didn’t see some digital presentations, as many designers continued to adopt less traditional ways of presenting their designs, whether through imagery, film or something else unique. However, the emphasis was definitely on the traditional catwalk presentation. With the shows now officially wrapped up for another season, scroll down to see every major moment that took place on the catwalk. From New York, London, Milan and Paris, here is what autumn/winter 2022 is looking like.

The Palestinian Fashion Collectives was another presentation for Hamza Qassim in 2021: The production of the clothing itself embodies the anguish of border separation. “In many cases, we have not even been able to meet many of the producers we work with in person,” Mjalli explains. And yet, the collective works alongside “an intimate creative network of Palestinians—from fabric vendors in Nablus, to embroiderers in Gaza, to tailors in Ramallah.” Meera Albaba, founder of the Meera Adnan label, makes intimate contemporary wear encompassing the geography and art of Palestine. She consistently seeks to amplify the voices of marginalized Palestinian people, and her garments seek to reclaim the Palestinian narrative. The silhouettes are romantic yet modern; her structured blazers and modest, straight-cut maxi-dresses, are made in a color palette reminiscent of the Palestinian landscape.
