The overarching mood was one of real optimism, but where the previous season perhaps went into overdrive with the desire (desperation?) to get dressed up for even the most low-key of weekly grocery shops, the outlook for spring and summer is that there is a time and place to be extra fabulous but still a strong demand and a necessity for easy, simple, luxurious, gorgeous clothes and outfits you can fling on in a hurry. In a typical season, our most-viewed shows list is fairly steady, but fall 2022 was no typical season. Early on in Milan, almost two years to the day after Covid broke out in Italy, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted any sense of post-pandemic return to normalcy the industry was hoping for. The rest of the season was an open question, whether or not designers chose to confront it: What is fashion’s place in a moment of incipient war? After a very strange few years, a relatively normal schedule of fashion shows wrapped in March. For autumn/winter 2022, plenty of designers were back on the physical schedule after taking a few seasons off due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while more international editors and influencers also flew around the globe to sit front row at the major shows as restrictions eased.
A textured updo feels romantic and effortless so your accessories should capture this vibe. Find small pins that you can scatter to the side of your updo, or a medium sized comb which can sit in the middle to frame your wedding veil. Depending on the size of your bun and your face shape, exaggerated earrings will balance out your look and will bring attention to the front and sides. It would be a shame to cover up beautiful braids and twists so pair this look with a sheer minimalist veil or position it just above the bun (rather than the crown of your head). Avoid veils with extra wide combs (i.e. wider than 3-3.5 inches) as larger veil combs will look too bulky. Veils attached to smaller combs from 1.5 inches to 3 inches will create a more contemporary finish.
One of the most wearable trends to come out of this round of runways was the pleated skirt, and while there was a light scattering of mini incarnations reminiscent of this summer’s favourite tennis skirt, for SS22 it’s all about the pleated midi. Other than that, there really are no rules. Printed, plain, colourful, monochrome, paired with knits or paired with a bralette – as long as it’s pleated then you’re bang on the money. While tights are a mainstay in many winter wardrobes, when it comes to summer very few of us give even a moments thought to dressing our legs. Providing they’re covered in SPF and not overheating, we’re happy. But all that change next season, as thigh high boots with feathered trims, lace leggings and embroidered hosiery take centre stag. For the last 18 months and the past three fashion seasons, the concept of a traditional fashion week has not existed. As a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the social restrictions that have come with it, designers have not been able to host catwalk shows in the way we once knew them, with many fashion houses turning to digital formats or hosting audience-free shows, with some even forgoing the concept altogether. However, last September, we saw more in-person fashion shows than we have experienced for a very long time. Although the schedules were still not quite back to normal, a loosening of restrictions in the four major fashion capitals allowed fashion week to take place in a physical setting – and plenty of designers returned to the catwalk for the first time since March 2020.

I am so happy to be back in New York, a city that has always been close to our hearts, said creative director Sarah Burton of the house’s first show in the city for more than 20 years. We showed the Dante collection here in 1996, and then came again with Eye in the autumn of 1999. So, this collection is inspired by that idea of community, and specifically by mycelium, by the reality of nature as a community that is far, far older than we are. Mycelium connects even the rooftop of the tallest skyscraper to the plants, to the grass, to the ground, to animals and to human beings. Mycelium has the most profound, interconnecting power, relaying messages through a magical underground structure, allowing trees to reach out to each other when either they or their young need help or are sick. The idea is humbling – beautiful – and, of course, a metaphor for interconnection and for community between people, between us all. We exist as single, individual entities on one level, but we are far more powerful connected to each other, to our families, to our friends, to our community.
